Our Story

Our story is about our values, our community and our heritage, and our strong sense of belonging. It’s about the quality of the lives we are privileged to live here. And most of all, it is about wanting to protect and preserve those things we value.

We are a collection of communities which are fiercely independent, yet united in our love for this region. Anyone wishing to identify with Central Otago and its people needs to understand our values and interpretation of lifestyle, business and community activity.

Central Otago has a unique set of natural circumstances. We value the sense of space and scale, our knee-high flora and fauna; the distinctive tussock and the soaring native falcon, karearea; the native insect species and alpine plants that cling determinedly to the schist-clad ranges: all of these deserve our protection and respect.

We value our vast landscapes and potent seasons, the way the light casts shadows over the mountainsides and the way hoar frost colours the land an eerie white. The soft glow of fields of hay in the late summer, studded with wildflowers, and the vibrant colours of the autumn leaves.

We value our story. From the earliest Maori settlers to the pioneering farmers and the gold rush on to the present day, it’s a proud story that holds a unique place in New Zealand’s past. Remnants of this history can still be seen by those who care to look. Preserving our region’s past is as important to us as protecting our future.

Our brand has been developed to help us express our belief in these values – to give us a unique mark that allows us to let others know how much it means to us to live and work in this vibrant region.
