Ranfurly Art Deco
|
Ranfurly gradually became the main centre of the Maniototo after being established in 1898 as a railhead for the Central Otago railway line.
However, in the early 1930s, a series of disastrous and suspicious fires destroyed many of the town’s buildings including the town hall and hotel.
To rebuild, local architects chose the fashionable, relatively cheap and easily constructed Art Deco style of the Northern Hemisphere. Adorned with moulded embellishments, decorations and colours this style contrasts with the rural, isolated setting of Ranfurly!
The Rural Art Deco theme began with the former Centennial Milk Bar and was the Art Deco Society’s first project. With forty four Art Deco buildings, library (1926), a store (1927), a hospital (1930), a hotel (1934) and various other buildings covering the 1930-1950 period there is plenty for the Art Deco enthusiast to see. Our Art Deco festival is held annually on the last weekend in February, and features all kinds of fun and frivolity!
The Ranfurly Art Deco Walk takes approximately 50 minutes and explores the unique architectural style of Ranfurly, commencing with the Centennial Milk Bar, where you can obtain a map.
Recognising our differences in Ranfurly and the fact we’ve inherited historical wealth, we believe the Art Deco Festival protects our heritage and embraces this wonderful diversity that our town is proud of.
